人間再無呂不韋。

世代如落葉，一代出生一代凋謝。呂不韋這一撒手人寰，自己固然得到了解脫，卻給他的家屬和舍人們留下道難題。

如我們所知，呂不韋雖然已經遠離秦國的權力中心，也不再擔任相國一職。但他畢竟還是秦國的文信侯，食著河南雒陽十萬戶，無論是在名義上還是在實質上，他都仍然是秦國的臣子。按照慣例，他這種級別的人物一旦過世，必須停屍宅內，先向咸陽報告，等待秦王對其治喪事宜作出具體批示，而不能私自做主，說埋就給埋了。

關於如何處置呂不韋的後事，呂不韋的家屬和舍人們起了分歧。家屬們主張先向咸陽報告，再作理會。而舍人們則哀主人之冤死，怒嬴政之無情，他們擔心，說不定嬴政會以平民之禮，將呂不韋胡亂葬之，嬴政已經欺凌主人於生前，絕不能再讓他侮辱主人於地下，於是主張先以諸侯之禮將呂不韋下葬，等木已成舟，再奏請咸陽批准。舍人們人多勢眾，家屬們哪裡爭執得過，只得依從。

於是，舍人賓客數千人竊共葬呂不韋於河南洛陽北芒山，與其妻合冢。因為呂不韋的妻子下葬在先，故其冢在民間仍被稱為呂母冢。
